The Doctor’s Little Book of First Aid and Safety for Hikers

During the initial Covid epidemic, hiking and camping increased significantly, and has continued to grow.

I recently published a quick guide to first aid, especially for hikers and campers. And I tried not to make it boring.

I have quite a background in giving first aid. And hiking.

When I started medical school, I was surprised to learn that hardly any of the other students had ever helped someone who was injured in a car accident or while camping, yet I could count 8 times in which I had. That number was to grow much higher over the years.

While working in the ER during residency, I saw the results of poorly given first aid–that is, before the patient arrived. After residency I practiced Family Medicine, working in the regular clinic and in an urgicenter, for 13 years. Even in the office, I saw people who had been injured on a regular basis.

It’s my hope that a short book will serve as a solid introduction to practical first aid. I hope that people will quickly read through it before their next hiking trip, and take it with them, whether in print or in digital form. I’ve specifically written this to be light enough to carry and small enough to download onto a cell phone.

I’d be interested in hearing from others what topics you’d like covered. I’ve done my best to consider the basics.
